Rise from Ashes

| In
586 BC, enemy forces punched through
the walls of Jerusalem and set fire
to the city gates. The Babylonian
army demolished the Jewish temple,
charred the landscape, and torched
the homes. They killed many of the
inhabitants and hauled away the few
remaining to a foreign country
thousand of miles from Israel. |

Nearly a century and a half later,
Nehemiah - a descendant of the
exiles - learned that the walls of
his ancestral city still lay in
ruins. He heard that the people were
demoralized and unprotected. Even
more heartbreaking was that God's
reputation had been disgraced. A
dream began to burn in Nehemiah's
heart that compelled him to act.
The
parallels to San Diego are
unmistakable. Last year, the Witch
Creek fire roared through Rancho
Bernardo, scorching our campus and
our neighborhood. Although RBBC is
not Jerusalem, and none of us is
Nehemiah, we follow the same
sovereign God whose hand is upon us.
The
book of Nehemiah is the journal of a
man who made a difference. He faced
opponents who wished to keep the
City of God in ashes and ruins, but
he wanted to see God's reputation
restored and his people encouraged.
His vision drove him to rebuild the
walls of Jerusalem in only 52 days.
But Nehemiah's project was more than
just stone and mortar. It was a call
to "rise from ashes," a dream we too
share.
